Fans of The Wild Rose Press are in for a treat with the launch of MAXIMUS - book I in the Imperial Desire series. Set in ancient Rome, Maximus is the story of an exiled soldier and the woman he wronged years ago.

Carissa Valeria distrusts the handsome soldier who rescues her reckless son from plunging to an early death. Recalling the man's heartless treatment of her from years ago, she itches to even the score, but her son hails the rescuer as a hero. When he becomes her neighbor, her son's friendship with the soldier threatens to uncover old secrets and place her family and her heart in danger.

Exiled to the countryside by the Roman emperor, Maximus Octavius is confounded by the brittle countenance of the woman he's willing to befriend. She's afraid, and he's determined to find out why. But helping Carissa and her son means confronting the guilt of his long-forgotten past and stirring the silenced passion in his heart.
Can Maximus win Carissa before fear and revenge tear them apart forever?

Four cubits away, a man idly leaned against a tree, watching her with a carefree grin on his face.
Maximus.
“Have you come to finish the job, Ulla?” Carissa’s hand instinctively went to the knife. He shook his head. “That little weapon doesn’t scare me half as much as the arrow you had earlier. You’ve come without the protection of the bow this time. Why?”
Carissa held fast to the knife, estimating her chances at removing it before he reached her. “I’m looking for my boy, nothing else.” Her pulse raced, and her mind swirled in turmoil. She swallowed down her fear and held his gaze, desperately wanting to run away but knowing he would catch her easily.
“He is not here, as you can see.” The man’s intense blue eyes burned into hers, hungry for something she could name but preferred to forget.
“I’ll be on my way.” Rooted to the spot, she trembled. If she passed him, she would be unable to defend against an attack.
His grin faded, and he narrowed his eyes. “You don’t like me, do you? Is it all men or just me you have a grudge against?”
“Just you.”

  1. My Gosh, this so reminded me of Richard Burton! Great excerpt too.

I can't wait for my Cactus Rose release in 2013. Castillo's Fiery Texas Rose was a blast to write. Like your hero/heroine there is that fine line between love and hate that they cross.

  3. I'm on digest at our WRP loop, so only say your shout out for the blog today. I love the book cover and the blurb. Wonderful sounding book, plus I love second-chance love stories like yours (to un-wrong that wrong sort of thing)
Now, you did say to share genre's today - though I don't see it here at the blog, so forgive me if I am committing a faux pas.
I also write for The Wild Rose Press in the Last Rose of Summer line which is contemporary - and which is for characters over forty. My current release is an over-forty reunion story about a divorced couple. I'm happy to say the early reviews for TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT have been very positive.
    Wishing you great success!

  4. Christine,
Your book sounds really interesting! I write for Vintage (20th Century). My last book was Bronze Skies (WWII romance). Just got a contract for Prime Catch which is set in 1923 Alaska.

  5. Hi Christine,
Good luck with your release--how exciting! An ancient Rome setting sounds wonderfully different. I write for the Black Rose line, and my debut novel with TWRP is set for official release Feb 15, although it is one of the early Kindle release titles. Wraith Redeemed is a second chance story, too, where the hero leaves the heroine for all the wrong reasons, but returns for all the right ones. Have fun with your launch!

  6. Best of everything with the upcoming release, Christine. You must be getting nervous. Love the sound of your book and Ancient Rome appeals to me.
I write for the Crimson Line with a three book series coming out in 2013. Should have a release date for book #1 any day now. ; )

  7. Great excerpt! I have a special soft spot for all things Italian.

My debut novel, The Accidental Cougar, is being released on Black Friday. Yikes. Not exactly sure how that will go over...it's for the Champagne Rose line, and the title says it all. Congrats on your release!

  8. Almost positive I've already left a comment, Christine. My 11th C English romance, CHERISH THE KNIGHT, clearly shows I'm a history lover :-)
